E3 is over, so let's finish up with the few remaining MMOs of the future.
- Guild Wars 2
This game wasn't being shown at E3 on purpose since the developers believe their game is for the players and E3 isn't. This game promises to change the way MMOs work. It promises no more questing but a dynamically changing world that responds to every players actions and decisions. Promising to much? probably.
- All Points Bulletin
This game is basically a better version of Grand Theft Auto as an MMO focused on pvp and character customization. It plays more like a first person shooter then a MMO. The lack of long term progression because of the way it plays may have subscribers leaving to play games like call of duty instead of paying for a game that charges by the hour, or month.
- DC universe
Superhero MMOs tend to have a limited audience. This game also doesn't seem to add anything really new to the genre.
The best hope for the future of MMOs likely lies with either Star Wars: The Old Republic or Final Fantasy 14. If neither succeed, there is always WOW:Cataclysm. You can check out some of these more promising titles in the links below.
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Final fantasy 14
WoW: Cataclysm
In your opinion what is the best MMO syle game? My boy spends like his whole night on the computer playing WIRLD Of Warcraft, what's the big deal?
ReplyDeleteJust curious, what's your opinion on Play Station? And when's Final Fantasy 14 coming out?
ReplyDeletePlaystation is great, especially if you like more Japanese singleplayer style games. FFXIV is coming out september 30th for PC but it was recently pushed back to March 2011 on PS3.
ReplyDeleteI like MMORPGS the best since those are the ones that usually have a full functioning version of the world they are trying to create. As for playing World of Warcraft all day he's probably hooked on all the rewards the game throws at him. Once he reaches the max level in WOW he will likely slow down and if he keeps playing will only be on for a few hours at scheduled times running raids with his guild.
If your worrying about him being addicted... yeah MMOS are the most addictive form of videogames, they are great but self control in the user is important 2...
Why do people like multi-playing online? What multi-playing game do you play?
ReplyDeleteI don't play any one game really, I'm constantly jumping between them. Sometimes if it's a really big release I'll make characters with friends on a certain server. I think we have about 15 people ready to play FFXIV as part of the same linkshell. Hope its good, there hasn't been a really good MMO since around 2004...
